EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING

RETRO 8O

ACRYLIC ON PANEL
ABOUT “RETRO 80”

This painting dates back to 1980. At that time I was very involved with process painting and exploring the possibilities of acrylic paint.

This painting was produced by painting in reverse on glass. I worked from the front backwards, pulling the finished painting from the glass and mounting the slick, glassy side face up on a panel.

I was influenced by Ron Davis’s resin pieces at the time. These types of concerns in painting still interest me and I have recently begun a series of expirements in this direction.

I find it unbelievable that with all of the possibilities open to the artist today, we should limit ourselves to one approach or another. I make traditional paintings, use the computer and projected images, make and design sculpture, write and perform music, and teach. I don’t consider any of these things as a hobby, rather, it’s all just part of who I am as a full-time practicing artist.

ABOUT "THREE PANELS"

I painted these panels separately, pouring thin washes of acrylic over them in layers, until they "resonated" with me. By hanging them together, they work as a sculptural gestalt, interacting with the separate elements and the space in unexpected ways.

The arrangement and number of panels is variable and could be combined with other surfaces (metal, stone, etc.).
